A man has been rushed to hospital Thursday evening (Sept. 5) after a backyard deck suddenly collapsed at a Burlington home.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at the Arbor Lane South Village townhouse complex at 2055 Walkers Line, just north of Upper Middle Road.

Burlington firefighters and Halton Region Paramedics responded, along with Halton Regional Police.

Firefighters initially believed the man was pinned under the deck after it came crashing down, but he was not trapped. He has been taken to hospital by paramedics with what were described as serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The incident caused several neighbours in the complex to come rushing to the scene, with police saying two women narrowly missed being hit by the falling structure.

“We heard screams,” said Molly Breathnach, who lives in the complex. “We came running over and noticed this huge mess.”

Neighbours say the man taken to hospital was cooking on his barbecue when he yelled at two women below as he felt the deck giving way.

Burlington firefighters are staying at the scene and are awaiting a structural engineer to come from the City of Burlington to investigate whether other townhouses in the complex, namely the adjacent ones, are at risk.
