Patios and decks are a popular addition for many homeowners.
They offer an open space to enjoy personal time outside and are great for socializing with friends, family and guests.
However, in the Midwest, as harsh winters hit and temperatures drop, enjoying deck space can be difficult.
That’s why patio covers and decks can be a great solution to be able to utilize decks during the winter months.
Patio covers allow homeowners to enjoy outdoor areas with a finished look while protecting them from the elements in the colder months.
“It’s going to protect your deck and keeps the sunlight off of it, keeps the debris off of it … you’re gonna get more lifespan out of your patio if you do have it covered,” said Chris Hornbuckle, project manager estimator at the Dillon Co.
The covers are usually custom made and customed designed to fit each roof or deck.
“They’ve really changed the styles of them and they’re going to obviously be cheaper than to actually construct an actual rough and have that tied into your roof,” Hornbuckle said.
Patio covers vary in structure and style, which includes lattice, vinyl, wood, metal, canvas, and wood, aluminum, cloth and umbrella.
Many covers also will have gutters to maintain the deck or patio as well.
“Most patio covers have a gutter system with them. So the key part of that is you want to make sure that you get up there with a hose. You wash the gutters out and make sure downspouts are working properly,” Hornbuckle says.
Patio covers also are beneficial as most can be stored easily for the summer months.
“You just need to make sure that before you have to roll them up, you want to definitely make sure they’re good and clean,” Hornbuckle says.
Patio covers are available at many local home repair stores.
