The right deck and fence can resolve privacy concerns while maximizing the pleasure to be found in your own backyard.
A compact townhome, big family house or something in between — “whatever the size of your property, a deck is a great outdoor space to entertain, lounge and enjoy the sunshine,” says Paul Sharples, who works in Copp’s Buildall fence and deck installation division and takes care of outside contractor sales.
“The deck provides an outdoor living area where you may not have had one before due to muddy, saturated land or a rolling landscape. It can also cover an old, broken-down concrete patio and bring life back to your property,” Sharples says. “Multi-level residences, which are popular around London, can have twice the impact, with double-decker decks at ground level and the second storey.”
It all begins at the Copp’s Buildall Outdoor Design Centre at 2090 Dundas St., London, where homeowners can find deck and fence planning assistance, building materials and installation services. “We can also go to your home to discuss options and take measurements,” says Sharples.
The Copp’s Buildall team simplifies the homeowners’ goal to get building this year by offering a free consultation with a deck and fence installation specialist. “Some people are handy with tools yet lack the ability to visualize how their deck will look. Others know exactly what they want but don’t have the time or skill to build. We help them all,” Sharples says.
The team uses the homeowner’s ideas to create the design and provide a 3-D rendition of the plan view, showing how the boards are to be assembled and what the finished result will be. “We’ll also cost out your custom project and print a materials list so you know what to buy and how much to budget.”
Copp’s Buildall has constructed many local decks using pressure-treated wood, cedar and composite, ranging in sizes and shapes from 10’ by 10’ decks to larger 22’ by 42’ decks that also incorporate pergolas and other shade structures. The company can produce decks of any geometric shape, including custom angled faces and rounded radius corners.
“There are so many different design options when it comes to decking. With our custom capabilities, you can have any look you choose, from straight planking to diagonal herringbone to incorporating a picture frame inlay that gives each portion of your deck a unique design,” Sharples says. “You can add lighting, custom glass handrails – whatever you imagine.”
The material used to build the deck or fence is another important consideration.
Pressure treated wood is a hardworking, affordable choice that is durable and strong.
Cedar can be left in its natural state or stained. It is resistant to mould, moisture rot, bug infestations and UV damage.
Composite, made of PVC and wood fibres, won’t splinter, crack, rot or warp. No staining or painting is required with low-maintenance composite.
When the homeowner wants the deck and fence installed, Copp’s Buildall schedules and sends in local subcontractors who have earned the company’s trust. Installation services are Ontario Building Code-compliant and a warranty is provided on labour.
“We make certain your project is completed on time and on budget,” Sharples assures.
“In comparison to other home renovations, the cost of a deck is relatively inexpensive,” he finds. “This is a great benefit for homeowners who are on a budget yet still want to add value to their property. Although the price of your deck will depend on the size and building materials selected, it is still less expensive and invasive than building an addition.”
Decks and fences both improve the homeowners’ quality of living. Creating privacy, the fence offers walls for an outdoor room and a backdrop to garden beds. A beautifully crafted fence defines the yard’s perimeters and enhances the home’s architecture. It also keeps pets and children safely inside while deterring prying eyes and intruders.
“Decks and fences are sought-after features for potential homebuyers,” Sharples observes. “Homebuyers want to see a secure, family-oriented outdoor area, which helps them picture living in and using that space for years to come.”
“Several of our happy past customers who built decks and fences and then sold their homes have returned to us for help with their new homes,” says Sharples. “Once you live with your perfect custom deck and fence, you won’t want to give them up!”
