Planning & preparation
Low-voltage light systems are safe and easy to install and can be fitted to a new or existing deck.
You’ll need to have an external 13 Amp plug socket situated within 5m of your deck, so if you don’t have one already, have one fitted by a qualified electrician.
When deciding how best to position your lights, remember the maximum distance between each light is 1.2m.
It’s best to carefully measure and mark out the position of each light, to ensure perfect spacing.
When deciding where to position your lights, bear in mind that you can buy extension kits to increase the total number of light fittings.
Do it right
Measure and clearly mark out the points where you will be drilling; this will help to make sure your light fittings are all at equal heights and spacing.
Carefully position all cables, and ensure they are not pinched or trapped by existing joists, noggings or deck boards.
When drilling holes to accommodate the cables, don’t forget to apply preserver to all cut surfaces to help prolong the life of the timber.
Staying safe
The installation of an external 13 Amp plug socket should always be carried out by a qualified electrician.
When drilling, it’s always best to wear safety goggles and to take care.
Wear protective gloves when handling the deck boards or applying wood preserver.
When using wood preserver, always follow manufacturer’s instructions for drying and safety.
Do not plug in the lights until all fittings are safely secured.
Aftercare
Any buildup of dirt around the lights can be wiped clean using a soft, dry cloth. Do not use any abrasive materials as it may damage the finish.
